Aim: To learn the names of 10 household chemicals and identify if they are a solid, liquid or a gas.

    Definitions:

    1. Element; A single form of a chemical
    2. Compound: A mixture made up of 2 or more elements
    3. Reaction: A process in which chemicals mix together to form a new substance.

    10. Banana
    Steps:

    1. Search the internet for the name.
    2. Find an image.
    3. Found out what type of item it is (Liquid/Solid/Gas)
    4. Find the Chemical name.

Repeat the steps for all the chemicals.

Task 1: Put the 10 chemicals in a chart with the titles - Name, Chemical ingredient(s), Image, Solid/Liquid/Gas.

    8. Funnel
    Steps:
    1.  Balloon 3: Put the yeast and the sugar in the bottle.
    2.  Balloon 3: Put the balloon onto the bottle of yeast and sugar, and watch the magic happen.
    3. Balloon 2: Put the Soda Water into the bottle, and put the Salt into the balloon.
    4. Balloon 2: Then put the balloon onto the bottle that has the soda water, in it and watch the magic happen!
    5.  Balloon 1: Put the Vinegar into the bottle, then put the Baking soda into the balloon, and watch the magic happen.

    A Oobleck recipe!

For all of you experimenters out there here is a experiment to experiment.

    Ingredients

    • 2 Cups Cornstarch
    • 1 Cup Water
    • Food coloring (optional)

    Instructions

    • Step One Pour 2 cups cornstarch into a bowl
    • Step Two Add 1 cup of water and stir to combine
    • Step Three If adding food coloring to your oobleck do it at the mixing stage

    Troubleshooting

    • If your oobleck is too watery, add a couple tablespoons of cornstarch and mix.
    • If you’re oobleck is too flaky or solid, add a couple tablespoons of water and mix.

If you’ve never made oobleck before one of the hardest things to figure out is just what you are looking for in terms of consistency. I use this as my guideline: When mixed you should be able to press a handful of oobleck into a ball in your hand; when you release the pressure the ball should “melt” back into a liquid

Aim: To separate colours by using the process of chromatography.

Definition: Chromatography is a method of separating out materials from a mixture.
    Eg. blood, ink, drugs,

    Scenario
A crime has been committed. The police have a signed cheque and a letter from the same crime scene but it seems like the handwriting is different. They have 3 suspects but not enough evidence. They need to know if the letter and the cheque were written by the same person.

How do they tell if the pens used for both of these pieces of evidence are the same?

    A Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe!

For all you bakers out there here is a recipe on how to make Chocolate Chip Cookies.

    These are the ingredient

    • 225g (1 cup) caster sugar
    • 300g (2 cups) plain flour (sifted)
    • 200g (1 cup) of butter melted
    • 1tsp vanilla extract
    • 1tsp of baking powder
    • A pinch of salt
    • 1 egg
    • 100g-200g chocolate bar or chocolate chips (if you want to make them as chocolate chip biscuits)                                                                       The Method:
    • Add the sugar and melted butter in a bowl and mix together – a wooden spoon is fine, no need for a whisk.
    • Sift the flour, baking powder, vanilla and salt together and add to the sugar and butter mixture. Add the chocolate chips at this stage if you’re making chocolate chip cookies.
    • Mix together using your hand. Once you get a dough texture, add the egg and knead using your hand again.
    • Spread some butter onto a baking tray. Take some of the dough, roll into ball then flatten a little. Keep them on the small side as they spread out during baking. Also, don’t keep biscuits close to each other otherwise they will get stuck together.
    • Place in the oven and bake at 160C, gas 3 for 10-20 mins. The bigger the cookies, the longer they’ll take to cook. They’re ready when the edges are a bit golden.                                                                                                                                                                 Hope this is helpful for some of you people out there.

    A Slime Recipe!

For all you slime lovers out there, and you dont know how to make slime, well here's a recipe on how to make Slime!

    What you need:

    Heres how you do it:
    1. In one bowl mix 1 oz. glue (about ¼ of the glue bottle) and ¼ cup water. If you want colored slime, add food coloring to the glue and water mixture. Lift some of the solution out of the container with the stir stick and note what happens.
    2. Add ¼ cup of Sodium Tetraborate (Borax) Solution to the glue and water mixture and stir slowly.
    3. The slime will begin to form immediately. Lift some of the solution with the stir stick and observe how the consistency has changed from Step 1.
    4. Stir as much as you can, then dig in and knead it with your hands until it gets less sticky. This is a messy experience but is necessary because it
allows the two compounds to bond completely. Don’t worry about any
leftover water in the bowl; just pour it out.
    5. When not in use, store the slime in a plastic bag in the fridge to keep it
      from growing mold.
