Humanities - Essay planning

 Text - Abomination

Author - Robert Swindell

Breach of HR Article interact:

  • Breach means to not have followed it, or have broken it.

Article 1: All human beings are born free and equal in dignity + rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

- You cannot be born into slavery, and no one is born differently. Everyone's the same. You have access to basic human rights, water, food, shelter.

  • Martha, born into a religious cult, has basic human rights but no personal freedom. Martha is treated like a slave by her parents.

  • Abomination/Jim, born and kept in a cage not allowed outside, has basic human rights, lost rights to education, love, freedom, socialization, clothing.

Why the author did this to Jim: Good storytelling, builds suspense & tension, feels sorry for Jim, angry at parents, shows relative influence of bullying.

Quotes:

  • No friends because I’m righteous - I know I seem weird to them but it's not me, inside I'm just like them Pg.18

  • Not allowed radio - The righteous believe the Devil reaches young people through pop music. Pg.11

  • Kid in the basement - Abomination? It's a boy Scott a little boy. He lives in the cellar in a cage Pg.143

  • Mother says they're raised in the dark like heathens.

  • Jim doesn't see his mum - And she lets her kid live in a cage?...she doesn't know. Pg.146

Main story idea: This makes us feel empathy, depressed, sympathy for Martha. We forgive Martha for keeping the secret about Jim because she is suffering.

Martha went to live with her sister, she got new clothes, not treated like a slave.

Abomination, reunited with his mum, gets clothes, proper shelter, basic human rights. Trauma - not gonna have a normal life.

Gloriavale questions

1. How did Gloridale affect David's outlook on life?
Gloriadale poisoned David's mind, convinced him that specific things were bad, convinced him that if he did anything wrong he'd go to hell, filled his life with abuse and trauma, and blocked him away from society. When he left he was so full of rage, he hid a knife under his pillow once for "protection" as Gloriadale terrorized him, he didn't know a life without abuse, which made him believe that the real-life outside of Gloriadale was like that too.

2. Does the documentary fairly represent life in Gloriadale?
His explanation does fairly represent what his side of life was like in Gloriadale, he briefly explains how life in Gloriadale as a woman is but explains how he lived in Gloriadale, how men have to live, what men are taught in Gloriadale.

Health - Vape task

What...is in a vape and how does a vape work?

Vaping is a vapor created by an electronic battery-powered device that is inhaled. They are filled with a liquid that usually contains nicotine, flavorings, and chemicals. The liquid is heated into a vapor, which the person then inhales.

Why… is it harmful in the short term and long term?

Some of the theories about vapes are that they blow up, if people vape continuously for a long period of time the harm caused could progress and cause major harm. If you vape for a short period of time then it can cause more frequent coughing & wheezing.

What...are two perspectives about vaping (what are they) and why are these perspectives held?

Some people think that vaping is something to help blend in and be cool & others think that vaping is a good way to quit smoking.

Why... might young people choose to vape?

Some young people might feel pressured to vape because others say so, or might see older kids vaping around school, and since that the older kids are the role models to the younger kids. Others might do it because they treat it like a personal trait.

When….and why did vaping become an issue in NZ?

Vaping became an issue about 2 years ago when more and more people started to use them, they are set for 18yrs & over but since then young people around 12 - 14 or more around those ages have somehow got a hold of a vape and have been using them which causes harm to them.

Your choice….what do you conclude about the importance of this health issue to young New Zealanders?

What I think would help conclude or at least minorly stop issues with vapes in New Zealand is bump the age of getting a vape up to 21+ my may or may not make changes.
